One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.
Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.
Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

First Line: : "This isn't funny!" her father yelled.

Review: This is a tough one for me there were some aspects I really liked about Born at Midnight such as the camp filled with teens who are either some sort of supernatural being or have some type of supernatural gift. Such as Kylie who can see ghosts. I also found it interesting how the government was actually involved and they knew about the camp and even held authority over it.

What made me bring the rating down is there was way too much boy drama in it for me. There is the ex-boyfriend Trey who broke up with Kylie because she wouldn't have sex with him but now all of a sudden wants her back. Then there is Derek the Fae who has a thing for Kylie and Lucas the werewolf who has got it bad for her as well. Not to mention Kylie has already had kissing sessions with each of the boys. Also it's the typical "oh I don't know who I like more" syndrome with her. Another thing that bugged me a little was Kylie in general, she is so much in denial about the fact that she is gifted that she rather believe she has a mental disorder or a tumor. Then there was the fact that throughout the entire book we are trying to still figure out what she is, eventually it just got old and I was more annoyed then anything.

Minus the boy drama...and Kylie's denial this was a fairly quick read. What made the book enjoyable as far as the characters go were Kylie's friends Della and Miranda they had a way of keeping things lively. Also I liked Perry he is some powerful shape-shifter but whenever he was involved something hilarious went down.

Overall I have no intentions on picking up the next book in the series. Maybe if I cared about the main character more and who she will end up with in the end but since I don't I wont be reading Awake at Dawn anytime soon.

  1. I really like your review because I had the same issues with the book. Waaay too much boy drama. Reminded me a little of the House of Night books. I picked up Awake at Dawn but had to stop reading it halfway through or else I would have probably tossed it out the window :-(

    1. And that is why I am afraid to pick up the second book because with the way this book was going I know there is going to be more Lucas vs Derek and i'm hoping Trey is out the picture in the second book.

  2. Love the cover. Love the synopsis. But it sounds like a lot of other books in this genre . . . like Fallen by Lauren Kate. And I'm not in the mood for more love triangles.

    1. Lol I don't even think it was a love triangle that consists of three people this book had four.

  3. I know right!! Should I choose Lucus or Derek? Oh I don't know, let's just make out with both thier faces first. That's chill, whatever. I don't mind a good love triangle, but that is simply indecent. Of course, I'm continuing on with the series but lol ;) that's okay. I just want her to choose. I understand though why you don't!

    1. Yea and lets not forget Trey and their little make out session in her cabin, it just all got to be too much.
